Future Downtown Plaza Brings Light to the City of Salisbury

Salisbury Maryland is a small city located on the Eastern Shore and most widely known for its award-winning university and close proximity to the beach. For many years now local officials have been working tirelessly to build this city to its full potential and make it an exciting and homey location for citizens to grow their families and bring new businesses to the Delmarva Peninsula.

The evolution of this small city has been extensive by implementing the well-known Third Friday event where once a month local vendors and artisans set up booths with trinkets and treats for sale. There is often live music, food trucks and entertainment the whole family can enjoy. Salisbury has also hosted the National Folk Festival for the past two years bringing music lovers from all over the nation to the small city.

The next step in the bettering the area is creating a newly renovated downtown plaza in the heart of Downtown Salisbury. The project will essentially be giving a facelift to the city with new sidewalks, streetlamps, and landscaping as well as allowing local businesses and residents to run high-speed internet lines.

Though the finished product is to be a beautiful new downtown area, the lengthy construction has caused problems for local business owners, some of which have decided to relocate their businesses in order to avoid the hassle of dealing with the construction.

Other local businesses, however, are please and very much excited about all the changes coming to the area. Nicole Rogers, manager of Angello’s Scoops located on E Main Street, thinks the city has great potential and looks forward to the changes that will make downtown a family destination. “It’s difficult to deal with right now but the end result is a newer, better city to raise our families and grow our business in. Who wouldn’t want that?”

Rogers and the rest of the Angello’s team are excited for all the changes coming to the area and look forward to the conclusion of the construction which is expected to end in late 2020.

City of Salisbury Hosts First Ever Marathon Event

The City of Salisbury hosted their first ever full marathon, half marathon and 5k event on the morning of April 6th 2018. Runners from all over the nation flocked to our small city to enjoy a one of a kind course.

The 26.2 mile course was a qualifier for the famous Boston Marathon. Known for its flat terrain, Salisbury became the ideal course for competitive runners to qualify for the legendary race. Every mile or so had snack and aid stations as well as volunteers and bystanders cheering on the runners.

“The SBY Marathon was exciting in that it brought a Boston qualifier to our backyard.” Said Jeff Rodgers, a seasoned marathon runner “All the volunteers made you feel incredible and encouraged you to push through and run on.”

While some came with high hopes of placing or getting a qualifying spot, others were simply along for the ride.

Amanda Wilkinson , a Delmar Delaware native who had never run a timed race in her life said she had been training for months for this event. For Wilkinson it wasn’t about finishing as fast as she could but just to finish at all. She wanted to prove to herself and her loved ones that anything is possible and wanted to represent the Salisbury area.

“The race was incredible” said Wilkinson. “The first half felt great but it got pretty intense after mile 18 or so, but I finished!”

Pohanka’s involvement with the race was substantial given that they were the title sponsor. The start and finish lines were both laced with the Pohanka Pays It Forward logo reminding all the runners and spectators the importance of giving back and supporting the local community.

“Pohanka made all the difference” said marathon participant Janet McGillian. “Their involvement really made the event possible.”

The organizers of the Salisbury Marathon were very excited with the great success of the event. Hopefully this will become an annual tradition that the people of Salisbury will look forward to and participate in for years to come.

Shore Insurance Helps Record Breaking Number of People Save Money at Pohanka of Salisbury

Your in good hands with our Allstate Insurance team here at Pohanka of Salisbury! Last month alone our team of educated and skilled product specialist helped a record breaking number of people save money on their insurance policies! Our teams goal is to lower your rate while making sure you have the exact amount of coverage you need.

Shore Insurance at Pohanka of Salisbury was first created back in 2015 when Pohanka Automotive Group of Salisbury’s Owner/Operator Sandy Fitzgerald wanted her customers to have the ability to purchase car insurance on site when purchasing a new or pre-owned vehicle. “It’s a really great opportunity to be able to purchase your insurance at the actual dealership” Says Bethaney Ralph Head of Shore Insurance. “Your not just spitting numbers and mild information into a computer but your having a real discussion with an actual insurance representative who knows the exact car your buying and its history.”

Shore Insurance not only provides customers with car insurance but also sells home insurance, renters insurance, life insurance, boat insurance, motorcycle insurance, jet ski insurance and more! “If it has a motor we can insure it” says Ralph.

Customers often rave that the prime benefit of purchasing form Shore Insurance is the ability to sit down with a personal  and local insurance agent to take a look at their current coverage. Very often consumers only look at their insurance policy when it is first purchased and forget to revisit the policy when a life changing event occurs.

“I constantly hear our agents telling customers they only have this little tiny bit of coverage that is the absolute minimum” Ralph explains “Often customers have a large amount of capital invested in these assets and need to up their coverage to protect it. This kind of personal advice can not come from a computer.”

Shore Insurance’s personal approach to the insurance industry has caused this strong team to shatter records and save locals more money than ever before. They will continue to help anyone who walks through the door and implores  everyone in the Delmarva area to look over their current policy and give them a call with any questions. When was the last time you checked your coverage? Don’t trust those 1-800 numbers to get you out of a bind. Call our team today at (443) 260-1610

Pohanka Sponsors Fifth Annual New Years Ball Drop

Ball drop

On Sunday December 31st 2017 Downtown Salisbury hosted their Fifth Annual New Years Eve Ball Drop of which Pohanka was a main sponsor.

Despite record setting temperatures in the single digits the attendance was immaculate! Local restaurants and cafes were open and most of the local bars had live music planned so people could go in and out of the cold as they pleased but still be part of the festivities. 10 minutes before midnight the streets of Downtown Salisbury were packed with people. Over 1,500 attendees stood in the cold side by side to see the Salisbury Ball Drop to ring in 2018. As the clock struck midnight confetti cannons went off sprinkling the celebrating onlookers.

The Downton Salisbury Ball Drop was a recommendation of those who most often attended Salisbury’s well known event “3rd Friday.” 3rd Friday is a downtown festival on the third friday of every month where local artists and vendors set up tables and plan activities for the people of Salisbury. The creators of 3rd Friday wanted to continue to create that home town feel and thought the Ball Drop was a way to begin.

“Events like this absolutely help create a sense of community” Says Jamie Heater, Executive Director of the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District. “ Ringing in the New Year is all about one moment – and coming together to celebrate that moment in the heart of Downtown Salisbury is exactly what our event producers believe is so important.  Our community deserves opportunities like this – to be together, and to celebrate – without fear, but with positive energy!”

Pohanka, being a firm believer in the Salisbury community and positive energy, took a major role in the planning and implementation of the Salisbury Ball Drop. Pohanka was not only the main sponsor of the event itself but Pohanka employees also helped with the setup and implementation of the unforgettable night.

“Pohanka is one of Downtown Salisbury’s biggest, and most reliable supporters, and our efforts would not be possible without their support.” Says Heater “From New Years Eve Ball Drop to the Downtown Salisbury Festival, Pohanka always makes sure our bases are covered.  They are even a prime sponsor of the National Folk Festival in September 2018.

Without Sandy and the Pohanka of Salisbury family – we would not be able to offer the community free, family friendly events.  Pohanka loves this community – and is always willing to support worthy causes.”
Pohanka was proud to aid Downtown Salisbury with this event as part of their Pohanka Pays It Forward program that has donated over $1,000,000 to over 750 local charities and causes. They look forward to assisting the community in later on events including the highly anticipated Folk Festival.
