Pohanka Raises Over $17,000 for the American Cancer Society at Annual Golf Tournament

One of the largest and most anticipated charitable events of the year on the Delmarva Peninsula is the annual Pohanka Pays It Forward Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament was held on Sunday, August 8th at the GlenRiddle Golf Club in Berlin MD, and benefited the American Cancer Society. Over 70 golfers came out for a day of fun, sport, and charitable giving.

Many Pohanka employees as well as a large group of local business owners, golfers, and philanthropists attended the tournament and put their best foot forward on the green.

“It’s a great event we here at Pohanka look forward to all year,” Says Jared Algier, General Sales Manager at Pohanka Honda of Salisbury. “It’s a fantastic way to bring people together and raise money for the community we live in.”

Collectively the tournament raised over $17,000 for the American Cancer Society and gave their first-place trophy to the Pohanka Toyota of Salisbury team which included Toyota’s General Manager Thurman Donoway and their Sales & Leasing Consultant Ryan DeVage.

Many participants were thrilled with the outcome of the tournament and look forward to participating next year. Caleb Moore, Sales Manager at Pohanka Honda of Salisbury said, “I have not had that much fun in a long time and I am looking forward to participating in the future to help the tournament grow.”

Pohanka of Salisbury has been known for its continuous community involvement and generous charitable donations on the Eastern Shore since founding the “Pohanka Pays It Forward” charity initiative in early 2009. Sandy Angello-Fitzgerald, the automotive group’s Owner/Operator, started the initiative amidst the great recession in order to grow the community we all live in and raise our families in. Since that time the program has succeeded in donating over $3,000,000.00 to more than 750 local charitable organizations.

5 Steps to Prepare your Vehicle for Harsh Winter Weather

Driving in winter weather can be difficult and scary. Snow and sleet can make the roads slippery and even cause harm to your vehicle. Still, certain precautions can be taken to ensure your vehicle is as ready as possible to face harsh weather conditions. Here are five easy steps to prepare your vehicle for driving in winter weather.

1. Check Your Tire Pressure

In order for your tires to perform their best make sure your tire pressure is within its recommended range. When it’s cold outside the air within your tires condenses often causing your tire pressure to fall. If your tire pressure falls too low it results in excessive wear, tread separation, and even a viscous blowout while on the road.

2. Check Your Battery

Cold weather also negatively affects the battery of your car, truck or SUV. The strength of your vehicle’s battery plummets in cold weather compromising its ability to start and run your vehicle efficiently. It is important to check the condition of your car battery before taking your vehicle out on the road when the outside temperature is freezing or below.

3. Invest in Winter Windshield Washer Fluid

Not all windshield washer fluid can help when traveling in icy conditions. In fact, some will even freeze while being applied to your windshield. For this reason, it is important to make sure you use proper winter weather windshield washer fluid when driving in snowy conditions. This will provide prime visibility and will not freeze to your windshield when traveling in freezing temperatures.

4. Have the Proper Tools Readily Available

It may sound simple but make sure you have the necessary tools available to help your vehicle and passengers get through winter conditions. This can include an ice scraper to help defrost your windshield and windows, tire chains for hard to navigation conditions, a first aid kit for emergencies, and more. Make sure you know exactly where these items are and how to get to them in need of an emergency.

5. Check for Wildlife

After a storm, be sure to check under your vehicle before starting it. Many times stray wildlife hides under automobiles in order to keep warm or shelter themselves from the storm. Starting your vehicle too quickly can harm them and even cause damage to your car.

Concerned about preparing your vehicle for harsh weather? Come by one of our service departments for a complete vehicle inspection and have our expert technicians make the necessary adjustments for your vehicle to perform its absolute best with the changing conditions.

Pohanka Donates 30 Cases of Dog Food To Wicomico County Humane Society

Pohanka of Salisbury is always there when times get ruff. Recently the Wicomico County Humane Society was in desperate need of wet dog food for their injured puppies with weak and sensitive teeth. The shelter was almost completely out of wet dog food and feeding these poor animals dry food could further harm their health and prolong the healing process. In need of help, the Humane Society staff went to social media imploring local residents and business to donate a can or two of wet dog food to their shelter.

Pohanka took the initiative one step further. Only minutes after seeing the post, Pohanka’s Marketing Team was clearing local markets out of wet dog food. They packed the back of a pickup truck with over thirty cases of wet dog food cans and headed to the shelter.

The volunteers and staff were amazed when a truck full of donations pulled up to their door at just 10:30 in the morning. “It was absolutely incredible and so helpful. You have no idea how much this will help these animals grow and heal. We are all so grateful and know we can always count on Pohanka.” Said Siobhan Wyatt the Shelter Manager.

Pohanka’s donation along with numerous other wet food donations by various locals stocked the shelter’s pantry. The animals the shelter houses are once again properly fed and are on their way to finding new homes.

City of Salisbury Hosts First Ever Marathon Event

The City of Salisbury hosted their first ever full marathon, half marathon and 5k event on the morning of April 6th 2018. Runners from all over the nation flocked to our small city to enjoy a one of a kind course.

The 26.2 mile course was a qualifier for the famous Boston Marathon. Known for its flat terrain, Salisbury became the ideal course for competitive runners to qualify for the legendary race. Every mile or so had snack and aid stations as well as volunteers and bystanders cheering on the runners.

“The SBY Marathon was exciting in that it brought a Boston qualifier to our backyard.” Said Jeff Rodgers, a seasoned marathon runner “All the volunteers made you feel incredible and encouraged you to push through and run on.”

While some came with high hopes of placing or getting a qualifying spot, others were simply along for the ride.

Amanda Wilkinson , a Delmar Delaware native who had never run a timed race in her life said she had been training for months for this event. For Wilkinson it wasn’t about finishing as fast as she could but just to finish at all. She wanted to prove to herself and her loved ones that anything is possible and wanted to represent the Salisbury area.

“The race was incredible” said Wilkinson. “The first half felt great but it got pretty intense after mile 18 or so, but I finished!”

Pohanka’s involvement with the race was substantial given that they were the title sponsor. The start and finish lines were both laced with the Pohanka Pays It Forward logo reminding all the runners and spectators the importance of giving back and supporting the local community.

“Pohanka made all the difference” said marathon participant Janet McGillian. “Their involvement really made the event possible.”

The organizers of the Salisbury Marathon were very excited with the great success of the event. Hopefully this will become an annual tradition that the people of Salisbury will look forward to and participate in for years to come.
