City of Salisbury Hosts First Ever Marathon Event

The City of Salisbury hosted their first ever full marathon, half marathon and 5k event on the morning of April 6th 2018. Runners from all over the nation flocked to our small city to enjoy a one of a kind course.

The 26.2 mile course was a qualifier for the famous Boston Marathon. Known for its flat terrain, Salisbury became the ideal course for competitive runners to qualify for the legendary race. Every mile or so had snack and aid stations as well as volunteers and bystanders cheering on the runners.

“The SBY Marathon was exciting in that it brought a Boston qualifier to our backyard.” Said Jeff Rodgers, a seasoned marathon runner “All the volunteers made you feel incredible and encouraged you to push through and run on.”

While some came with high hopes of placing or getting a qualifying spot, others were simply along for the ride.

Amanda Wilkinson , a Delmar Delaware native who had never run a timed race in her life said she had been training for months for this event. For Wilkinson it wasn’t about finishing as fast as she could but just to finish at all. She wanted to prove to herself and her loved ones that anything is possible and wanted to represent the Salisbury area.

“The race was incredible” said Wilkinson. “The first half felt great but it got pretty intense after mile 18 or so, but I finished!”

Pohanka’s involvement with the race was substantial given that they were the title sponsor. The start and finish lines were both laced with the Pohanka Pays It Forward logo reminding all the runners and spectators the importance of giving back and supporting the local community.

“Pohanka made all the difference” said marathon participant Janet McGillian. “Their involvement really made the event possible.”

The organizers of the Salisbury Marathon were very excited with the great success of the event. Hopefully this will become an annual tradition that the people of Salisbury will look forward to and participate in for years to come.

On September 22nd 2017 Mercedes Benz of Salisbury hosted their first ever yoga night! The event included an evening yoga session with world renowned yoga instructor Elyza Dolby as well as wine, d’oeuvres and a relaxing period for participants to talk with the instructor as well as the other attendees. The class, which was held in the Mercedes-Benz of Salisbury showroom, was an “all levels” yoga class that showcased a mixture of deep breathing exercises and focused on fluid movements and balancing postures.

“We were very excited to have the opportunity to do an event like this” said Alex Macatuno Mercedes-Benz of Salisbury General Manager. “It was something different that showed our love and respect for our community members health even if they are not in the market for a new vehicle.”

The class was open and free of charge to the public which allowed anyone who was interested to attend. Yoga mats were even supplied for those who didn’t bring one. Those who attended the event were raving about there experience. Many asked for the event to be held again and some wished it could be done on regular intervals.

Hosting a yoga event might be something new for the automobile industry but Pohanka is well rehearsed in bending over backward for their customers and the community. Pohanka of Salisbury Raises Over $15,000 for Relay For Life

realy

After a year of dedicated fundraising the Pohanka of Salisbury Relay For Life Team was able to donate over $15,000 at the 2017 Wicomico County Relay For Life Festival on September 22nd.

Pohanka showed their automotive spirit by decorating a booth at the festivities as a make believe car wash. Kids could run through the streamers and sponges while bubbles were blown in the wind to give the effect of an actual car wash. The team also created a Pohanka exclusive convertible made from cardboard and complete with working head and tail lights. Each of the Pohanka store logos were showcased on the side of the car giving a feeling of maximum Pohanka Pride. A livestream of this vehicles race around the track can be seen here. The team’s motto of “wash away cancer” was also shown through their sale of wet wipe containers specifically designed to fit in the cup holder of a car. All proceeds of these sales were donated to the American Cancer Society.

Of course these sales were not the only donation Pohanka made. In fact, Pohanka of Salisbury had been hosting fundraisers all year long to raise as many donations as possible for the Relay For Life organization. From in house paint nights to hot dog lunches Pohanka continuously looked for opportunities to raise money for this profound organization. President of the Pohanka Relay team, Samantha Seaton, even hosted a ladies night in which representatives from local companies made a donation to set up a booth in Pohanka Toyota and have the opportunity to sell their products to locals. Each vendor also donated an item to raffle off. All the proceeds from the raffle were donated as well.

“Everytime I think of Relay I think of the fact that we do this so one day we don’t have to,” Says Samantha Seaton. “We do all of this so that one day there will be a cure for cancer.”

A large portion of the community came out to the Wicomico County Relay For Life event. Many survivors and their family members walked the track but many local business and organizations also made an appearance. Families and teams from all over the state came to show support for those fighting for their lives. “I love seeing kids and families at these events because it’s important to inspire the next generation to get involved and be aware at a young age that they can make a difference.” Seaton exclaimed.

Pohanka’s year long combined efforts generated a donation of over $15,000 to give to the American Cancer Society. This was the second largest donation made by a single team in the county. The entire Pohanka team wanted to thank everyone who made a contribution to their efforts. The Pohanka of Salisbury Relay For Life Team is already working on fundraisers to start generating donations for next years relay.
