Pohanka Raises Over $17,000 for the American Cancer Society at Annual Golf Tournament

One of the largest and most anticipated charitable events of the year on the Delmarva Peninsula is the annual Pohanka Pays It Forward Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament was held on Sunday, August 8th at the GlenRiddle Golf Club in Berlin MD, and benefited the American Cancer Society. Over 70 golfers came out for a day of fun, sport, and charitable giving.

Many Pohanka employees as well as a large group of local business owners, golfers, and philanthropists attended the tournament and put their best foot forward on the green.

“It’s a great event we here at Pohanka look forward to all year,” Says Jared Algier, General Sales Manager at Pohanka Honda of Salisbury. “It’s a fantastic way to bring people together and raise money for the community we live in.”

Collectively the tournament raised over $17,000 for the American Cancer Society and gave their first-place trophy to the Pohanka Toyota of Salisbury team which included Toyota’s General Manager Thurman Donoway and their Sales & Leasing Consultant Ryan DeVage.

Many participants were thrilled with the outcome of the tournament and look forward to participating next year. Caleb Moore, Sales Manager at Pohanka Honda of Salisbury said, “I have not had that much fun in a long time and I am looking forward to participating in the future to help the tournament grow.”

Pohanka of Salisbury has been known for its continuous community involvement and generous charitable donations on the Eastern Shore since founding the “Pohanka Pays It Forward” charity initiative in early 2009. Sandy Angello-Fitzgerald, the automotive group’s Owner/Operator, started the initiative amidst the great recession in order to grow the community we all live in and raise our families in. Since that time the program has succeeded in donating over $3,000,000.00 to more than 750 local charitable organizations.

Pohanka Helps Cancer Patients on the Road to Recovery

The Pohanka Pays It Forward program is very active in community efforts. Since their beginning in 2009 this exclusive community outreach program , funded by Pohanka of Salisbury, has given over $1,000,000 to more then 750 non profit organizations.

Though they are very active with many volunteer groups one of their greatest partnerships is with the American Cancer Society. Not only is the  Pohanka Pays It Forward Relay For Life Team one of the top fundraising teams in the county but Pohanka is also largely involved in the American Cancer Society’s program “Road to Recovery.”

Road to Recovery is a service where cars and drivers are provided to cancer patients who don’t otherwise have transportation to get to and from their treatments. Patients notify Road to Recovery with their treatment schedule and local drivers make sure they will be available to get these patients to and from their treatments safley.

Pohankas involvement with Road to Recovery is rather extensive. The Pohanka Pays It Forward Road to Recovery group covers areas in Sussex as well as Worcester and Wicomico counties. Pohanka supplies two cars to the program and pays for drivers to actively be available when a patient needs them. Furthermore Pohanka pays for the gas, tools, parking fee and anything else required to get these patents to where they need to be at no cost to them.

These patients range from children to adults who often need rides to the Baltimore or D.C. areas where their doctors are located. Some of the patients only use the service once or twice but others require the rides every month, every week and some everyday.

“I love the program because i think it’s great to be able to give back in a way that the community really needs help.” Says Robert Cummings , A Road to Recovery volunteer and Pohanka of Salisbury Employee. “These people are unfortunately without a ride in a time when they most need it and we get to support that and give them the rides they need to get cured.”

Pohanka of Salisbury Raises Over $15,000 for Relay For Life

realy

After a year of dedicated fundraising the Pohanka of Salisbury Relay For Life Team was able to donate over $15,000 at the 2017 Wicomico County Relay For Life Festival on September 22nd.

Pohanka showed their automotive spirit by decorating a booth at the festivities as a make believe car wash. Kids could run through the streamers and sponges while bubbles were blown in the wind to give the effect of an actual car wash. The team also created a Pohanka exclusive convertible made from cardboard and complete with working head and tail lights. Each of the Pohanka store logos were showcased on the side of the car giving a feeling of maximum Pohanka Pride. A livestream of this vehicles race around the track can be seen here. The team’s motto of “wash away cancer” was also shown through their sale of wet wipe containers specifically designed to fit in the cup holder of a car. All proceeds of these sales were donated to the American Cancer Society.

Of course these sales were not the only donation Pohanka made. In fact, Pohanka of Salisbury had been hosting fundraisers all year long to raise as many donations as possible for the Relay For Life organization. From in house paint nights to hot dog lunches Pohanka continuously looked for opportunities to raise money for this profound organization. President of the Pohanka Relay team, Samantha Seaton, even hosted a ladies night in which representatives from local companies made a donation to set up a booth in Pohanka Toyota and have the opportunity to sell their products to locals. Each vendor also donated an item to raffle off. All the proceeds from the raffle were donated as well.

“Everytime I think of Relay I think of the fact that we do this so one day we don’t have to,” Says Samantha Seaton. “We do all of this so that one day there will be a cure for cancer.”

A large portion of the community came out to the Wicomico County Relay For Life event. Many survivors and their family members walked the track but many local business and organizations also made an appearance. Families and teams from all over the state came to show support for those fighting for their lives. “I love seeing kids and families at these events because it’s important to inspire the next generation to get involved and be aware at a young age that they can make a difference.” Seaton exclaimed.

Pohanka’s year long combined efforts generated a donation of over $15,000 to give to the American Cancer Society. This was the second largest donation made by a single team in the county. The entire Pohanka team wanted to thank everyone who made a contribution to their efforts. The Pohanka of Salisbury Relay For Life Team is already working on fundraisers to start generating donations for next years relay.
