Despite record setting temperatures in the single digits the attendance was immaculate! Local restaurants and cafes were open and most of the local bars had live music planned so people could go in and out of the cold as they pleased but still be part of the festivities. 10 minutes before midnight the streets of Downtown Salisbury were packed with people. Over 1,500 attendees stood in the cold side by side to see the Salisbury Ball Drop to ring in 2018. As the clock struck midnight confetti cannons went off sprinkling the celebrating onlookers.
The Downton Salisbury Ball Drop was a recommendation of those who most often attended Salisbury’s well known event “3rd Friday.” 3rd Friday is a downtown festival on the third friday of every month where local artists and vendors set up tables and plan activities for the people of Salisbury. The creators of 3rd Friday wanted to continue to create that home town feel and thought the Ball Drop was a way to begin.
“Events like this absolutely help create a sense of community” Says Jamie Heater, Executive Director of the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District. “ Ringing in the New Year is all about one moment – and coming together to celebrate that moment in the heart of Downtown Salisbury is exactly what our event producers believe is so important. Our community deserves opportunities like this – to be together, and to celebrate – without fear, but with positive energy!”
Pohanka, being a firm believer in the Salisbury community and positive energy, took a major role in the planning and implementation of the Salisbury Ball Drop. Pohanka was not only the main sponsor of the event itself but Pohanka employees also helped with the setup and implementation of the unforgettable night.
“Pohanka is one of Downtown Salisbury’s biggest, and most reliable supporters, and our efforts would not be possible without their support.” Says Heater “From New Years Eve Ball Drop to the Downtown Salisbury Festival, Pohanka always makes sure our bases are covered. They are even a prime sponsor of the National Folk Festival in September 2018.
Without Sandy and the Pohanka of Salisbury family – we would not be able to offer the community free, family friendly events. Pohanka loves this community – and is always willing to support worthy causes.”
Pohanka was proud to aid Downtown Salisbury with this event as part of their Pohanka Pays It Forward program that has donated over $1,000,000 to over 750 local charities and causes. They look forward to assisting the community in later on events including the highly anticipated Folk Festival.
